Which website should we assess?

Public pages only. No login, no code installed, no obligation. The report link is unlisted and emailed once. Three checks per hour per connection. Read the privacy policy.

Your Squarespace site outgrew its template, and you need to pick what comes next with evidence in front of you. Start there. Find export limits, compare alternatives by who edits the site, and see the direct case for staying put. The free assessment inspects your public pages only. It does not log in, read your analytics, or pull field performance data (that part stays with you).

Why do teams look for Squarespace alternatives?

You start looking when your template stops fitting your build: new content types, a second language, required integrations, or a performance score you cannot budge. Editors feel it first. And Squarespace locks down the sitemap and page source code, then routes you to its built-in SEO panels instead.

Speed can trigger the decision too. HTTP Archive data from June 2026, reported by hostingstep.com, puts median mobile Lighthouse scores at 30 for Squarespace, compared to 44 for WordPress and 62 for Wix. Squarespace serves a median mobile payload of 3.60 MB, forcing visitors to download 1,572 KB of JavaScript. That payload is the part that bites. If your score sits near that median, your pages carry the same weight, and switching hosts will not fix it. But the same source credits Squarespace with the strongest server response measured. Check your own numbers before you decide your site matches the median.

What does Squarespace export, and what stays behind?

You export site content into an .xml file. It packages your layout pages, a single blog page with every post, up to 1000 comments per post, text blocks, image blocks, and gallery pages. Some structure is thin (text inside embed and Instagram blocks exports with minimal structure).

Your album, cover, index, info, calendar, portfolio and store pages stay behind, along with any extra blog page you run, dropdowns, audio, product and video blocks, drafts, style settings and custom CSS. You also lose content in your page-specific headers, footers and sidebars. You export products separately to a .csv file, and your contacts the same way. Treat your move as a rebuild, not a transfer. You will see the gaps on day one.

If you move to WordPress, linked PDFs export in the file but do not import. Watch the images too. Self-hosted imports can also leave your images as remote links that break if you cancel, which is a quiet way to lose a photo library.

Which Squarespace alternatives fit a brochure or portfolio site?

For a brochure or portfolio site, pick Framer or Webflow when your team edits layouts without an engineer. Choose Format or Adobe Portfolio if you only display visual work. Pick Carrd if you run a single page. So each option demands a trade-off, like your familiar editing interface or your current layout.

Judge the public output first. Do not rely on marketing claims when you can read what the site sends to visitors. Measure the JavaScript bytes sent to visitors and the HTTP headers returned by the server. Then check the integrity of your headings and structured data, along with the export path for your content later. The free assessment extracts these signals from your live site, so you can compare your baseline against a published demo built on the platform you are considering.

Stay put if your site loads quickly and your one or two editors have what they need. That is enough, and no one gets extra credit for migrating. Squarespace says its Basic plan suits smaller sites with one or two contributors, covering a portfolio or a blog.

When is Webflow the right step up, and when is a developer-built site?

Pick by operating model. Webflow or Framer serves you well when marketers publish without an engineer. But a custom build on Astro or Next.js fits when load times, data architecture, or application logic matter more than a visual canvas.

Astro fits your marketing site because it delivers static HTML with almost no client script. Next.js paired with a headless CMS like Sanity or Contentful fits when you run dynamic features, personalization, or large editorial teams. The trade is real. You give up visual site builders, third-party plugins, and an out-of-the-box admin. I move legacy setups and WordPress estates to these architectures, and the rule holds: the more your content is modeled as types and fields, the more you gain from leaving a template.

Look at who pushes updates on Tuesday morning. If a marketer publishes without an engineer, pick a visual canvas. If an engineer ships code while a writer fills structured fields, pick a CMS. The answer is usually already visible in your calendar.

What does a Squarespace migration cost you in time and search traffic?

Your migration costs come down to rebuilding omitted assets and writing a redirect map for organic traffic. No audit does it for you. So estimate the work from your existing page inventory by tallying what imports cleanly against what requires manual reconstruction.

Google's site move guidance gives you the order. Map your old URLs to new ones, update your internal links, create a new sitemap, and set server-side 301 or 308 redirects from old to new, without chains. If your site is large, you move it in sections. Keep your redirects in place for at least a year.

After your redirects deploy, verify that canonical tags reference your new URLs and that pre-launch noindex directives are stripped. Test redirect paths in the URL Inspection Tool. Monitor search traffic across both domains in Search Console, and submit your updated sitemap. Skipping the noindex check is the classic way to launch invisible.

How do you check your own Squarespace site before deciding?

Run the free assessment on your homepage. In about two minutes, you get a single score out of 100 with the technical evidence behind each of eight pillars. The scan evaluates your homepage and up to eight sampled pages: headers, markup, structured data, headings, script and image weight, robots tags, and canonical signals. Enter a work email so your report link arrives once. And the tool allows three checks per hour per connection.

Your score lands in a specific band: 80 to 100 good standing, 60 to 79 constrained, 40 to 59 at risk, 0 to 39 legacy condition. If your site is offline, you see the Wayback Machine read instead of a score: months with a homepage capture and your archived pages, images, and PDFs.

The read does not log in, pull internal analytics, run field performance data, or interview your editorial staff. Use it with your page types. That pairing tells you whether your site demands a migration or targeted fixes, and that is the whole point of running it.

Every alternative, in one list.

01 · Webflow

A visual site builder where marketing teams design and edit pages without a developer. You need it when your Squarespace template limits your layouts and no developer is on staff.

02 · Framer

A design-focused builder built for marketing and portfolio sites, using an open canvas interface. Select it when your team prioritizes layout control and fast publishing on a mostly static site.

03 · WordPress with a light theme

A self-hosted CMS running a basic theme and minimal plugins, built to import the Squarespace .xml file. You need it when you want broad content types and plugins, and you accept that linked PDFs may not import and images may need re-uploading.

04 · Wix

A hosted builder offering templates and a visual editor, much like Squarespace. You need it when you want the same hosted setup with different design and app options. HTTP Archive data reported for June 2026 puts its median mobile Lighthouse score at 62.

05 · Shopify for stores

A hosted commerce platform centered on products, checkout, and inventory. Migrate here if your Squarespace site functions primarily as a store, since store pages and product blocks do not export in the .xml file and products leave as a .csv file.

06 · Astro with a headless CMS

A framework that compiles content sites into lightweight HTML, paired with a CMS storing your content in typed fields. You need it when speed and structure matter, an engineer works on the project, and you accept working without a visual canvas.

07 · Next.js with Sanity

A React framework using Sanity as the content backend, tuned for sites that behave like applications. You need it when you handle personalization, application features, or many editors, and you accept an engineer-managed stack instead of a hosted admin.

08 · Ghost for publications

A dedicated publishing engine focused on posts, newsletters, and memberships. Switch here when your site operates as a publication rather than a brochure.

09 · Format or Adobe Portfolio

Portfolio builders for photographers and designers displaying work in galleries. You need one when your site is purely a portfolio and your requirements stop at images and a contact page.

10 · Carrd

A lightweight tool built for single-page web properties. You need it when your whole site sits on a single page, such as a profile or a launch page.

11 · Stay on Squarespace

Staying put works for a brochure or portfolio site that loads acceptably, relies on one or two editors, and needs no new content types or languages. Squarespace says its Basic plan covers a portfolio or a blog for one or two contributors. So move only when your own read shows a clear cost.

Questions, answered.

01Can I move my Squarespace site straight into another Squarespace site?

No. Squarespace says you can't export content from one Squarespace site and import it into another, because doing so can cause broken image links and other issues. Importing into Squarespace drops in a static copy from an external source, with no connection or sync between the two platforms.

02Does a faster platform guarantee better rankings?

No. Core Web Vitals good thresholds sit at LCP at 2.5 seconds or less, INP at 200 milliseconds or less, and CLS at 0.1 or less, but passing them does not guarantee higher rankings. Your content matters too. So do structure and redirects. The assessment displays your direct evidence rather than a platform average (averages hide the pages that actually hurt).

03What if my Squarespace subscription has expired?

You can often reactivate your subscription to recover and export your database. Timing matters. If the billing lapsed too long ago, the host may have purged your content entirely. And when your live site is down, the assessment inspects the public Wayback Machine index to inventory your archived pages, images, and PDFs.

04Is Webflow cheaper than Squarespace for a store?

Compare plan prices and fees directly, because a public scan cannot settle the difference. Check the numbers yourself. Noqode states Webflow e-commerce starts on its Standard plan at $29/month. Squarespace's February 2025 USD pricing PDF lists Plus at $39/mo and Advanced at $99/mo, and Plus has no commerce transaction fee.
